The other day we visited Weld, Maine. We were planning to hike one of the mountains in Mt. Blue State Park, but first stopped in at the campground to scope it out for a future trip. The campground is nestled in the woods right next to Webb Lake, which has a sandy beach. Once the boys saw the sand, we had to stop and play awhile.
Then I discovered that kayaks, canoes and paddle boats were available to rent for just $3 per hour, so we had to paddle awhile.
The day didn't turn out at all like we had planned, we never made it on that hike, but we just let it flow and it was great. We'll definitely return to hike and camp, it is such a beautiful area.
While on the beach, we discovered an interesting bug:
With the help of Bug Guide, we've since found out that this 1.5 inch long creature is a Cimbex americana or Elm sawfly, a type of stingless wasp. The females use a saw-like organ to deposit their eggs in foliage or twigs and their larvae look like caterpillars of moths & butterflies. Bug Guide is a fantastic online identification tool for people living in North America, we use it all the time.
If you are in Maine, pick up one of the new (and free) state park passports. It has information about each of the 48 parks here and a spot for a stamp from each one you visit; collect enough stamps and you can win prizes - fun stuff for the little ones.
Wow - that looks gorgeous! Is that a moose in the first photo? It's great that you all take advantage of all this state has to offer - and it looks like you have a blast doing so! Hi to you and the guys :)
