Actual happiness looks pretty squalid in comparison with the overcompensations for misery. And, of course, stability isn’t nearly so spectacular as instability. And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune, none of the picturesqueness of a struggle with temptation, or a fatal overthrow by passion or doubt. Happiness is never grand.

Education
"Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the stars and the mountains above. Let them look at the waters and the trees and flowers on Earth. Then they will begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education." -David Polis
"Above all, do not lose your desire to walk: every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness; I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it... but by sitting still, and the more one sits still, the closer one becomes to feeling ill... Thus if one just keeps walking, everything will be all right." -Soren Kierckgaard
Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.
- Albert Camus
How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.
Annie Dillard
Arlo is very popular with the young ladies. Wherever we go, he is usually surrounded, like this:
But he has one very special friend, Ridley, that loves him to pieces and is always giving him the sweetest homemade gifts and letters, including his very first valentine.
Silas told me today that people are disappointed that there haven't been any videos of him skiing on the blog this year. So, not wanting to make anyone sad, here we go, it starts out with just Levi, but ends with Silas & Levi skiing together.
This shows their preferred technique, straight down with no or minimal turns. Si likes to throw in a few turns when it takes him to jumps or rough patches at the edge of the trail (adjacent to the woods).
Earlier this winter, I seriously considered spending $300 for a used pulk so that I could get out and ski with Arlo this winter. I'm so glad I didn't, after renting a pulk at a nordic center recently, I realized that it would be pretty easy to make one. Mark was quickly able to pull together the parts I needed, a couple of long hollow pieces of aluminum (first time I've been grateful for that humongous pile of scrap metal he has been hauling around for years), a padded belt and some rope, which he attached to Arlo's $13 plastic sled and we have a pulk that works just as good as the $300 model!
Our little Arlo is 11 months old! He is one busy baby.
With his four little teeth and secret baby language, he reminds us so much of Sunny Baudelaire from the Lemony Snicket books.
During one of his explorations, he discovered chocolate! Really, it was the dregs of his brother's hot cocoa licked off the bottom of the dishwasher, but he didn't mind.
Hi is still interested in legos, I have found 3 in his diaper so far.
Ho loves the outdoors.
He is still the sweetest baby and now he is also fun! He laughs at everything, plays and wrestles with his brothers and smiles at everyone. He imitates everything we do, even slapping cards down on the pile while we're playing Uno. We just love this little guy! He is so cute, we don't even mind his new habit of getting up super early and waking the rest of us up.
Life is more fun with this little one around, happy 11th month Arlo!
