Today, Silas finalized plans, picked out recipes and started on the first cake layer.
For Silas' first layer, he decided on a chocolate cake. He overfilled the 9 X 2 inch pan, so that the cake would bake over the top, allowing him to cut the top off flush with the pan and end up with a flat surface. The rest of the family was happy to help him take care of that extra cake top.
While the cake cooled, Silas mixed up a big batch of fondant.
This fondant is not healthy - butter, gelatin, milk, corn syrup, glycerin, vanillla, mixed wih 3 or 4 pounds of confectioner's sugar
Next, Silas, Levi & Arlo kneaded the fondant, using MORE confectioner's sugar, so it wouldn't stick.
The natural food coloring I picked up at Whole Foods ($17.99 for 3 colors) wasn't colorful enough for Si, so we picked up some food coloring (that may be slightly toxic) to color the fondant, and he seemed very happy with the result.
The first layer is done and ready to be frosted and covered with fondant.
So excited to have the second installment of the birthday cake project! I commend all of you on your patience working with fondant. Si, the first layer looks good. Levi and Arlo good work with the fondant, I know that must be difficult. Can't wait to see the finished result. Arlo, you are just so cute in the photos, I can tell you were working very hard to help Si and Levi.
Good luck putting the cake together. xo Nenny
