Biology lesson

Just a warning, some of these photos feature intestines, but Silas really wants to share this information.

Yesterday, the boys & I were tapping maple trees near the lake and spotted a couple of large fish on the ice.  When people ice fishing on Long Pond catch Northern Pike, they often throw the fish onto the ice for the eagles to eat.  The boys decided they'd like to dissect one of the pike, so Levi and I ran and grabbed one, while three eagles circled low overhead, ready for lunch!  It felt kind of risky.

All three boys were excited to see what was inside and were surprised to find it full of eggs.

They were most excited to find a little fish inside the stomach of the big fish.  After studying the pike for awhile, we brought it back down to the lake for the eagles to enjoy.

Levi is 8!

Levi's birthday celebration spanned 3 days, one day of cake baking, a birthday movie (Hobbit 2) and dinner out, then a visit to the New England Aquarium the next day.  He is also planning a camping trip for his 1/2 birthday.

 

Winter

We have had a fantastic winter here, lots of snow, some ice, lots of fun. 

Silas and Levi were out playing in the woods in December and found the perfect Christmas tree, it had just fallen over.

Every year we make a new Christmas ornament, this year we made wool acorns.

We had a couple of ice storms that made our world sparkling and beautiful.  Silas took the ice storm photos above and below.

We've skated, skied and biked on the lake a lot.

The boys were so excited about the giant snowflakes falling one evening that Levi ran outside naked but for boots and Silas dressed but barefoot.

Ski baby can now navigate the magic carpet slope by himself (sometimes).

The Mt. Abram West Side lodge looks like this on any given Thursday or Friday (almost all homeschooled kids and parents).

Arlo is really into baths, sometimes he takes three a day!

Winter is almost over, we already started tapping trees when the temperatures rose to 40 degrees for a few days.

Silas and Levi have been skiing and snowboarding.

When Arlo gets tired of skiing, he bikes, even in the lodge.
