Actual happiness looks pretty squalid in comparison with the overcompensations for misery. And, of course, stability isn’t nearly so spectacular as instability. And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune, none of the picturesqueness of a struggle with temptation, or a fatal overthrow by passion or doubt. Happiness is never grand.
- Aldous Huxley, Brave New World
Education
"Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the stars and the mountains above. Let them look at the waters and the trees and flowers on Earth. Then they will begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education." -David Polis
"Above all, do not lose your desire to walk: every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness; I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it... but by sitting still, and the more one sits still, the closer one becomes to feeling ill... Thus if one just keeps walking, everything will be all right." -Soren Kierckgaard
Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.
- Albert Camus
How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.

Silas told me today that people are disappointed that there haven't been any videos of him skiing on the blog this year. So, not wanting to make anyone sad, here we go, it starts out with just Levi, but ends with Silas & Levi skiing together.
This shows their preferred technique, straight down with no or minimal turns. Si likes to throw in a few turns when it takes him to jumps or rough patches at the edge of the trail (adjacent to the woods).
By all accounts, the farm sale was a success. The boys had a great time and sold a lot of hot cocoa, cupcakes and snowmen.
One of the best things about the fair was the behind the table bartering that happened between all the young entrepreneurs - cupcakes, cocoa & snowmen were traded for fleece headbands, felt acorns, hemp bracelets, rice krispie treats, hand-sewn bird ornaments, painted note cards and candles.
I love Levi's sign, he decided to make his words "fancy". I think he might share a love of cursive writing with his mother.
The fair took place in a heated greenhouse. It was very cozy, which may have hurt Levi's hot cocoa sales just a bit.
Arlo seemed to enjoy the day too. As usual he was very popular, here is a shot of him with his very good friend Ridley:

Both Silas & Levi are anxious for future business opportunities. Silas said he likes selling cupcakes, for now, but might want to try selling bigger & better things next!
Silas has been spending a lot of time in the kitchen lately. He made raspberry & blueberry pancakes three mornings in a row and chocolate cupcakes twice in the last week. He thinks selling cupcakes might be a nice way to make a living.
Lots to celebrate around here lately. Today, our sweet baby Arlo turned 7 months old.
My friend Deb gave me the fantastic stickers to mark each month of Arlo's first year, the 7 month sticker lasted just about one second before he pulled it off and started eating it.
This is pretty much what he is doing these days, looking for something interesting, grabbing it and sticking it in his mouth.
He chewed the sticker for awhile before going for the camera.
Even bigger news is that sweet little Silas is now 8 years old!
His only wish for his big day, besides Harry Potter legos, was to spend the night outdoors, even if it was raining out, and cook sausages over an open fire. His wish came true!
We drove to Acadia National Park on Thursday in the pouring rain, but just as we made it to Bar Harbor, the skies cleared and we had three days of perfect, if strangely warm, weather (it felt more like early September than late October). As requested, we woke Silas at 2:36AM on Friday morning to let him know he was officially 8, he said it was probably the best birthday ever.
It really was a great weekend for all of us.
Legos by head lamp light, there was a lot of this going on.
Arlo's toe jam after camping for 3 days - Levi begged me to include this photo.
Silas has wanted one of these for a long time. I've been shopping craigslist & ebay, looking for one for his birthday, and this morning we spotted this typewriter at a yard sale right around the corner. Just $5!
For the past 16 weeks, Silas has taken part in a group violin class. He has had a lot of fun playing with the other kids and in the last couple of weeks, he has actually become interested in playing the violin!
Today was his end of class concert, which was supposed to be an outdoor show, but had to be held in the instructor's garage, due to rain and temperatures in the 40's.
Despite the dreary and cold weather, the show was a huge success. The class performed recognizable tunes such as Jingle Bells, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Cheesy, Cheesy Pizza and Hot Cross Buns. The large audience, with at least 30 people attendance, erupted in loud applause and cheers after each song. Here is their rendition of Hot Cross Buns:
Silas will probably attend the class again in the fall. Once he has the basics down, he hopes to focus on fiddle music.
Silas wowed the crowd today at a local homeschool talent show with his dance performance to Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal". I know I'm a little biased, but I think he stole the show.
Even though the audience was quite large, Silas didn't seem to have any pre-performance jitters, he was just excited to get on-stage and dance.
Silas did a fantastic job, but the entire show was very entertaining. Over twenty kids showed off all kinds of impressive talents, including singing, unicycle-riding, ballet/jazz/modern dance, musical instrument playing, staged combat demonstrations, gymnastics, skits, photography and a book reading by the author. Si is already looking forward to the next show!
Hanging out before the performance with his friend Ceiba.
